Database Performance Tuning Jobs

I reviewed a number of Database Performance Tuning Jobs on multiple job boards.  The review included reviewing jobs across different RDBMS platforms: Oracle, SQL Server, Teradata,MySQL,DB2.  It is interesting to note some patterns across all platforms.

DBA Performance Tuning Jobs criteria

1. Although Database Performance Tuning  is a criteria for many jobs , SQL Server DBA jobs tend to include the Tuning aspects one part of a wider selection criteria. There were not many SQL Server DBA jobs were Tuning was in the Job Title.
2. Most jobs with Tuning in the Title were Oracle
3. All Tuning jobs required a significant amount of engineering and\ or development experience . At least 5 years
4. Most Database Tuning jobs were oriented towards Senior posts
5. In most jobs a wide range of skillsets were required , including skills on supporting platforms ,such as VM or Networks. I’ve noticed this pattern across the DBA world , more on DBA career growth
6. Most Tuning jobs required scripting knowledge.
7. Heavy emphasis on managing scaling efforts as transactions workloads increase
8. Knowledge of storage capacity planning
9. A wide range of DBA skills such as backup strategy and maintain database platform lifecycle
10. Communicating with management on recommendations to improve performance
