DAC and Server is in single user mode – Error 18461

10 October,2013 by Tom Collins

I was working on an emergency fix of a TempDB  file location issue and had to create a Dedicated Administration Connection . I followed these instructions and successfully started the SQL Service

Attempting to connect via the SQLCMD –A –E –S   switches , the following error message appeared

Msg 18461, Level 14, State 1, Server MYSERVER\SQL1, Line 1
Login failed for user 'MYDOMAIN\MYID'. Reason: Server is in single user mode. On
ly one administrator can connect at this time.

After staring at the screen (for a short while) , I realised other services exist automatically taking a connection. Checking services , I turned off : SQL Server Integration Services and SQL Server Browser.   Only the SQL Server Database Engine Services was started. I could now connect via the Dedicated Administration Connection
